The /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinitrc script starts the windowmanager, so you
should change it there. xinitrc might also be a symlink, so look in the
directory first to see if there is some suitable script there.
If you want maximal flexibility, you can start an xterm instead of a
windowmanager, and start the wm manually from there.

I do it by editting /etc/X11/XF86Config 
Near the bottom of the file there should be a line saying Virtual AAAxBBB
or something. (there might be more than one). Remove it or comment it out.
If you want different resolutions, you can either use XConfigurator (in
Red Hat), or edit the XF86Config file. I don't know about using
XConfigurator. There should be a file about editing video modes somewhere
on your system, but I can't find its name right now.
