There are three proprietary codecs that you can get for XAnim,
but that's not the problem.

This is from the XAnim home page:

"Please note that most formats can support a number of different
compression/encoding styles. Since new techniques are being
discovered, new ones are still being added. So while XAnim
supports the AVI Format, it doesn't yet support all the various
video and audio codecs that can be used inside an
AVI file." 

As I said originally, some won't play and some will play without
sound. I recently upgraded XAnim, and it seems to me that newest
version does a better job, but I really didn't keep track of
which ones didn't play under the old version.  There's a complete
list of which formats are supported on the web page.
