Joystick configuration?

Can anyone give me some tips on configuring my Sidewinder Gamepad under
RedHat 5.1?  I've downloaded and compiled several different versions of
the joystick drivers, but none have worked...

Mainly, I'm trying to get SNES9X to use a joystick, as it's not very
playable without -- when I start it, it complains that it can't
find/access /dev/js0... does the driver remedy this, or is this a
separate problem?
