What could be creating an "uptime error"?

Hi:

I'm getting an error that reads "Executing uptime gave an error.
Disabling load display." I get this error using TkDesk only after
compiling the kernel. Also, the running processes application (TOP)
won't run at all. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Ronald.
