Before you give up completely on your modem, take a look at URL
http://www.56k.com/ . The site has good tedhnical info on the various 56K
mrotocols and a troubleshooting guide at
http://www.56k.com/trouble/connect.shtml . From a quick look at it, the
problem could be protocol incompatibility between you and the ISP, a bad
phone line, or any of several other things.
