you need the rtl8139.o module, included with the kernel since 2.0.34

That doesn't sound right at all.  I would suggest removing the AWE 64,
and trying to get the NIC up and running first, since it's PCI.
 
Then, use isapnpconfig to set up the AWE64.  Is the machine dual boot?
If so, you may be better off changing the settings in win95/whatever,
since that will surely trample all changes you make in Linux with the
PnP tools.
