Hello,

I'm strangling myself in Cat 5 cable trying to set up my first LAN at home.

Here's what I have:

Slackware Linux (2.0.34) with a LinkSys Etherfast PCI NIC:
Network address 198.192.1.0
IP Address 198.162.1.1
Netmask 255.255.255.0

Win98 Box:
IP Address 198.162.1.2
Gateway 198.162.1.1
Netmask 255.255.255.0

Win 95 Box (not on lan yet, finishing cable run, will hook up tonight):
IP Address 198.162.1.3
Gateway 198.162.1.1
Netmask 255.255.255.0

Here's what I can do:

Win 98 box can't ping anybody unless I'm connected to the internet (via PPP),
then I can ping the box (itself) and the Linux box. But the ping times are
rather long (~225mS) and there is frequently up to 25% packet loss to the Linux
box.

Linux box can ping itself (both via IP address, hostname, and localhost) but
can't ping the Win 98 box (I haven't tried connecting to the Internet via PPP
and seeing if I can ping the Win 98 box but I'll try tonight).

I've double checked all the entries in hosts, host.conf, resolv.conf, etc. My
NIC gets detected at boot and ifconfig says that eth0 is up. I'm using the
tulip driver and just suscribed to their mailing list to try to check if the
card is working with Linux.

I was just wondering if I've missed something in the Linux or Win 98 setup or
if this problem is indicative of a misbehaving NIC in the Linux box.

Any light that anyone could shed on the situation would be appreciated. My
goal is to eventually get IP masquerading working with the PPP link and then
switch it over to DSL when it arrives later this month (although right now the
prorospect of installing a 2nd ethernet card in the Linux box is less than
appealing right now).

Thanks in advance,
David Churchill
