Well, what actually happens when you try to (for example) telnet out? Is the app itself missing? This could be an install problem, a permissions problem, or a bad PATH in your env. Are you trying only by hostname (not IP number)? If so, try by address. If that works, your problem could be with /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, BIND, or whatever you are using for name-to-address translation. Does the telnet client start and just sit there? This might be a routing problem (though it's hard to see how, if incoming telnets work). Do you find anything helpful in your log files (probably /var/log/messages)? What are the results of ping? What happens if you try to do a traceroute? Sorry I can't give you definite answers, but perhaps these will serve as the "hints" you asked for. Good luck.
