I've come across FIPS, a GNU utility for MS-DOS partitioning that has
especially good docs (imho). Just wondering what experiences people have
had with it; seems like the best bet, to me.

Rest of message simply is background for my question.

I'm thinking of pruning my HD to the bone (52 MB; sorry, low budget for
now; leery of installing another) and installing Monkey Linux, which
(iirc) needs its own partition(s). (I'll reread the FAQ and HOW-TOs!
Promise!) Monkey, despite its odd name, seems like the best compact
distrib. going for my needs. (I might post a query in a separate message
detailing needs and asking for recommendations.)

FDisk (MS) seems dangerous, and FIPS doesn't require de facto
destruction of existing contents. I know you should squash (back up and
defrag) what you want to keep, into low-numbered sectors, before using
FIPS.

As ever, many thanks in advance!
