Hey! Did you hear what Richard Adams was saying on Apr 18 ?

RA> >
RA> > And if you do load your card as a module you'll have to include
RA> > the following in /etc/conf.modules ...
RA> >
RA> > options ne io=0x300 (alter to your io address of course)
RA>
RA> Not realy true for standard isa cards, 0x300 is probed automaticly.
RA> You only need to define the ioport and irq if they are "non standard".
RA> Check /usr/src/linux/driver/net/ne.c for the "standard" addresses.

_IS_ really true for standard ISA cards. The ne.o module won't
autoprobe the io on a ISA card...But it does for a PCI card. How do I
know, because I checked with the following on my system...

ifconfig eth0 down
rmmod ne
rmmod 8390 (ne loads this)
edited /etc/conf.modules and #'d out the line options ne io=0x300
ifconfig eth0 192.168.123.51
got this error...
ne.c: No PCI cards found. Use "io=0xNNN" value(s) for ISA cards.
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
ne.c: No PCI cards found. Use "io=0xNNN" value(s) for ISA cards.
eth0: unknown interface: No such device

edited /etc/conf.modules and removed the # for the ne options line
ifconfig eth0 192.168.123.51
got this message...
ne.c:v1.10 9/23/94 Donald Becker ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
eth0: NE2000 found at 0x300, using IRQ 10.
and hey presto my network is back!
