Linux finally crashed forcing a hard reboot, anyway the end result is
that my GNOME panel no longer starts.

I use gnome-session and would like to know how I go about correcting
this, in short what files do I edit to return to the default
configuration. I tried Ctrl - Shift as specified in the GNOME user
manual, and the Session manager does not load, I checked the running
processes and GNOME session is among them.
