The 'wonders' of GUI configuration. I think you should consider using a
text based approach. Check out Josh's Linux guide <link can be found
from my site>, and configure it by hand. That way any problems will be
easier to diagnose.

In my experience the line is dropped if ppp is not running, you may not
(didn't mention) have started  pppd. If you fail to do so your line will
drop. The other complaint seems symptomatic of such a problem. If you
did not do so, exit without reset minicom and start pppd then try a ping
