Yes, it was the H8NTAI-32857-M5-E you mentioned.  You are intuitive.
 I didn't know which sticker had the precise data to identify
the modem.  I don't remember who the manufacturer is.  I could dig up
the email, I guess.
After digging up some data on this modem I accepted that the
manufacturer really was not
blame and that the packager was 'at fault'.  It was mis-packaged.  I
bought it at a very
small computer show that visits my area about each 4 months.  I probably
could have tried
to get a refund, but even for a winmodem, it was a good price.  I just
gave it to my son
who has a windows95 system.  I have since bought a ISA v.90 modem and
put it in my linux
IP-Masquerade computer.  I 'always' get a 49333 download connection and
I an quite happy
with this ISA modem.
