You don't say enough to allow for a complete answer, but in general terms,
here is what you need to do.
1. Find out your monitor's hsync and vsync rates - usually reported in the
documentation that came with the monitor.
2. Find out your video card's memory.
3. Using xf86config (or a different tool if you have one you understand
better), make sure these values are set correctly in the X server
configuration file (/etc/XF86Config).
4. Make sure the resolution you prefer is listed first in the resolution
options.
5. Make sure that you are using a server that supports higher resolutions.
(You probably are, unless you are using the old VGA16 server.)
6. After doing all of this, see if it changed your resolution. If it didn't,
either you did something wrong our your monitor/video card combination won't
support higher resolutions.
7. If the problem is just ordering the choices, you can change resolution by
pressing CTRL-ALT-+ or CTRL-ALT-- (minus).
8. If the problem is something else, you might be able to find it by looking
at the STDERR output of startx/xinit . The easiest way to do this is to
redirect it to a file, by runnign startx with a command like this: "startx >
errorc 2>&1".
Some of these suggestions may also help you correct the problem you
described in your other message. If you need more help from this list, next
time be sure to include a more complete description of your setup.
