Hey -- you'll want to note that you don't use "-" anymore with tar!  It's
been depreciated for awhile.  :)

I use the following line to untar and gunzip .tar.gz files:

        tar xpzvf file.tar.gz

That tells tar to gunzip as well as untar -- you just told tar to untar
:).
