I hope you at least got:

bash: 777: command not found

That should be a clue to what you are doing wrong.  The command is
chmod.  Bash is rather rigid in expecting the command to be first.

ls by itself will list the current directory.  Try

ls -l /var/lock

and see if you have any files named LCK..<device name>
