Two things I'd check -- IIRC, by default, Linux assumes
e-7-1 for modems, and most PC's default to N-8-1. This will
definately cause problems with your video. Two choices on
this one: fix Linux (can't help you here) or change your PC
terminal emulation to E-7-1 and see if that helps.

Another possibility: Perhaps you're using a different
terminal emulation than Linux is expecting. If so, you
might want to make sure your terminal program is using
VT100 or something similar...
