Recent distributions require 8 MB RAM to install, although they may
require less to run. For a 386, I usually install Slackware 3.0 (or was it
3.1 ?) with kernel 1.2.13. I'm not sure if this will run Netscape 4.0
however (not sure if it is worth running on a 386).
For the P1, any modern distribution will work.
As to what packages you need, definitely X, basic network stuff, and
whatever else you want to use.

40-60 MB (without netscape) is about the least you can get away with,
although it will be hard even to install; over
150 for a recent distribution. Netscape should add another 50.
I'd say a 486 with 250-300 HD and 16 RAM should be able to do everything
you want. Without Netscape or X, anything that has a 386 or higher goes.
