If xfs is running check with ps ax | grep xfs before shutdown, then
something is wrong, possably when exiting X for some reason xfs is
dying. Now i always say, (for my personal use), if it all works why
worry, one dat i will fund the answer.

As to a beter explanation either you have changed one or another
config file, ie been plaing with linuxconf, netconf or the likes, or
what could be the problem is that you have been trying to compile a
new kernel, if you have finaly succeded and installed a new kernel
then the chanches are you forgot to include one or other option,
*altho') i cant imagen what.

As a whole i would say, if X works and you see no ill effects other
the shutdown failed dont worry to much.

Realy only if xfs will not run. Maybe someone else will have a more
precies answer for you.
