additional consules..

My consoles available to me are f1 to f6. I amended my inittab file to
add f7 to f12 and while those consoles are now there  I can't log into
them .  I enter root and it wants a password, which I enter and it fails.
Yet, that same password works ok in consoles f1 to f6.

This is kernel 2.2.12 so I guess it has something to do with the new
kernel. Any thoughts on how to get those extra consoles to work?
