The only thing I can add is that if your kernel is too large you'll use
bzImage in place of zImage. Also, ( I use Redhat 6.0) you'll want to
copy the (b)zImage file from /usr/src/linux(whatever
number)/arch/i386/boot to /boot/vmlinuz  Copy the System.map file from
/usr/src/linux(whatever number) to /boot also. Last rerun /sbin/lilo .
So far this has worked for me since 2.2.10  Best luck!
