Apache with mod_perl and PHP

I am having involving mod_perl and apache.  I want to build in
mod_perl AND php into apache and I don't know what is the proper order
of doing it.  When I do one and then the other it seems like the one I
do last is overwritting the configuration file so only the module I
built last is included in apache.  Any help would be appreciated.
