AFAIK, under Linux, root may login from anywhere. Maybe you have had
experience with FreeBSD?
You do not need to be under the "wheel" group to be able to "su" as
root. You don't need to create a "toor" user either. Sorry if I
misunderstood.

As I have never been working in a LAN, I can't help you to mount a NFS
with Auto-Mounter Daemon. Anyway -if this helps- I mount automagically
all my peripheric devices (floppy drive, windoze partition, Iomega
Parallel Port Drive) with "amd".
You just need to edit your:
                        /etc/auto.master
and (eventually) /etc/auto.misc
just to tell amd what do you want to mount and where!
You may configure /etc/auto.master to "read" other config files other
than /etc/auto.misc which hold info about what do you want to mount.
