hi,

this is a question about installing redhat linux from cd-rom onto a 386
with a mitsumi cdrom.

beginning at the "CDROM type" stage of installation, i can't get the
installer to see my cdrom drive at all! here's what i've tried so far:

+ i've restarted the installer and put in the "linux hdc=cdrom" command at
the beginning "linux:" prompt. (i've also tried "hda" "hdb" and "hdd").

+ i've tried both "SCSI" (although i don't think my cdrom is a SCSI) and
"Other CDROM" options.

+ after selecting the "Other CDROM" option i've selected "Mitsumi" from the
list of drivers. The sobsequent autoprobe for my mcd driver failes, so i've
then tried to "specify options" myself. i'm not really sure what i'm
supposed to enter when i do this (on the "Module Parameters" page),
although i've tried putting in things like "0x320" in the space after "mcd="

+ i've returned to DOS and confirmed that DOS can see my cdrom (D: drive)
just fine. it can. it's possible that my dos system is screwed up since i
was deleting a ton of files to make room for the linux install. but i don't
see why that would make my cd-rom invisible to the linux installer,
especially if i've confirmed that dos can see it. also, when i boot into
dos i have to do it in "safe mode" because certain system files are
missing--would that indicate a problem?

+ i've also tried to copy all the files from the cdrom onto the harddrive
and then do a "harddrive" install, thus avoiding the cdrom install
completely, but my drive isn't big enough. it copies about half the files
then runs out of room. :)

help! i just want to wipe dos completely off this machine... and i can't do it!

thanks :)
