Answers (skipping the ones I can't help with):

1. There is no *official* archive of this list, though I believe people have
mentioned occasionally ome site that archives a lot of lists. One other
option is to consult the newbie FAQ maintained by Kenneth Stephen (at URL
http://www.linux-learn.org/faqs/html/index.html). It may be a bit out of
date, though -- I don't know when it was last updated.

2. X doesn't mount things; the "mount" command does. Add the entries to
/etc/fstab, with appropriate flags so that the kernel will give up, not
hang, if the CD or floppy drive is empty. Standard Slackware installs used
to set up the /cdrom device like that -- but I don't have one handy to check
the syntax. "man mount" or "man fstab" should turn it up, though.

3. No doubt some local process sent you mail. The easiest way to find out
where it came from is to read it. Use whatever mail reader you installed --
pine, elm, and mutt are common ones.

4. For performance reasons, use pci for SCSI, isa for modem. Aside from the
difficulties in finding a pci modem that isn't HSP ("Winmodem"), the pci bus
is faster than the isa bus -- scsi cards can benefit from this speed, but
modems are too slow for it to make a difference.

7. This is normal behavior for X. The cursor image is context sensitive,
controlled by the app running the window.
