Use the rescue diisks or the boot floppy(s) to start the system, then
check that /etc/lilo.conf has valid entries for your hardware.
rerun lilo and check its output, if all it says is
added vmlinuz (vmlinuz is the name of your image).
then it should boot.
The following is from the LILO readme.
LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
installer.
