You don't "dial out" on DSL; it is a continuous connection. Beyond that,
there are (at least) three possible ways PacBell may be provisioning you:
ordinary static IP addressing -- to use this, you just connect
the Alcatel to an Ethernet connection, load the module
for the NIC, ifconfig the eth0 (or other eth*, depending
on your setup), and set up a route to the ISP and
to its default route
ordinary dynamic IP addressing (using DHCP, I think) -- much
the same as above, excrpt you install the dhcpcd
package to get an IP address lease for the connection
to your ISP
PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) -- this is what I believe new PacBell
"Basic DSL" service get. I haven't set it up myself,
but I believe the PPPoE client from Roaring Penguin
(probably www.roaringpenguin.com) works with the PacBell
service. If not, PB offers its own PPPoE client for
Linux; check the PacBell Web site for it.
