I just made the sym link, but no joy; I got the same error
message :-( 

I'm getting the 2.95.2 tarball right now, though.

You must be right, I remember reading somewhere that rh uses
egcs, but I must have not installed something necessary, because
I ALWAYS get similar error messages when trying to install s/w.

I did install slackware 7.0 and can tell you that 
I was able to install tarballs easily (surprise, surprise.)
Recently however, I eliminated that install (nooooo!)

I'm getting ready to try another distribution, I hear
good things about both slackware and debian.
