Perhaps a matter of taste, but I like to check the arguments, and return
if they are wrong, and do the work in the end. So:

if (vc_id ...)
        return -EINVAL;

if (dsi.vc[channel]...)
        return -EINVAL;

dsi.vc[channel].vc_id = vc_id;

return 0;

This and the one above are exported functions, so I think it would be
good to check the channel parameter.
