Does your ISP automatically start ppp and have it authenticate with pap, or
does it expect a userid and password *before* it starts ppp? All your log
message says is that your end starts ppp, not the ISP's end. If they want
authtication before they start ppp, you need to do that via chat, not
pap-secrets.

What is the line that starts pppd in whatever script you run it from (I
imagine a version of ppp-on if you're using Slackware)?

What does the script that runs chat look like (mask any password, of course)?

Is there any output in your *debug* log from an attempt? Is there any output
in any log from chat?
