there are three things that effect the performance that you can do
something about.

1) adjust he elevator tuning in the kernel 
   -- see the thread from a couple of weeks ago

2) Tweak the block size matching to your average data transfer and

3) Match the ext2 file system size to the raid block size
   i.e.  mke2fs -R stride=(raid block size) -b ext2bksize
