I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how (or if there exists a patch) to achieve the following: A simple raid1 mirror with two disks. If the raid superblock wasn't written to on shutdown, can the raid device be made active in a degraded mode ? That is all reads from the first device only while a kernel thread synchronizes them in the background (rather like a hot standby construction which I know exists). Basically, with disks being so large these days it can take well over an hour for a machine to come back online after a crash/power failure. Please copy any replies to me as I'm not on the list.
