   Why not use striping instead?  Isn't the distinction that linear fills one disk
   up, then the next, etc, whereas striping alternates writes to each disk, taking
   advantage of SCSI bus mastering, for example?
  

Because you probably force drive seeks...and it's only for scratch
afterall.  Think about how much possible data transfer is lost during
a 9 msec seek (don't forget to consider the return seek).  You want
your disks organized to minimize seeks for best overall
performance...this doesn't mean RAID everything.
