(You didn't state it explicitly, so I assume you are trying to use the
latest 19990309 release alpha driver and tools).
I had the identical problem (on the surface anyway). Sounds like you may
not have applied the raid0145-19990309-2.2.3 patch (available at
ftp://ftp.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/alpha/raid0145-19990309-2.2.3
.gz )... I tried the raidtools with the stock 2.2.3 kernel with raid
support turned on and got exactly what you are seeing. After applying the
above patch and re-building the kernel, it all worked beautifully (so far
:-). FYI, I'm using an Asus P2B-DS motherboard with essentially an onboard
Adaptec 2940U2W.
