Hi all! I just felt I should follow up on my RAID-5 Newbie Questions post: First of all, thanks for all the suggestions I received! Unfortunately, the machine in question is a production machine, and all experiments had to be done nightly. Therefore, the rate of suggestions far exceeded my sustained rate of experiments :*( However, due to instability and random oddness in the 2.1.125 kernel, I had to switch to 2.0.36-pre15. On this kernel, RAID-5 seems to work well. A bonnie run on the same set of disks gave me: -------Sequential Output-------- ---Sequential Input-- --Random-- -Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks--- Machine MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU 1024 4600 94.8 9953 13.3 4243 12.2 6042 89.7 9246 10.4 66.1 1.6 Which is quite acceptable. (on 2.1.125 raid-5 gave me 100KB/s block writes, but 18 MB/s on raid-0. The RAID is 6x6GB quantum fireballs on two NCR53c810 controllers). I'll just go with this for now. If there should be any apparant problems with this, I'd me most happy to hear about it.
