Hello
I've tried installing the software-RAID on my RedHat 5.1 box, with 2.0.35 kernel.
First I've updated both
kernel-headers and kernel-source .rpm's to 2.0.35, downloaded the
raid0145-19981005-C-2.0.35.gz drivers
from ftp.kernel.org, downloaded the raidtools 1.45 source from ftp.kernel org, patched
the kernel (this went
ok) and then tried to compile raidtools. Already during the ./configure phase, I've
noticed the script said it
didn't find any MD headers in the kernel tree, but I still ran 'make', which (of
course) failed miserably during
the compile of the first file, mdadd.c with several errors and warnings.
I then downloaded the raidtools 1.45 rpm, installed it, copied the raid1.conf.sample
to /etc/raid1.conf as
described in QuickStart.RAID, modified it so that It conformed my system (I've
included this file with this
email). I have than ran the mkraid as described in the Quickstart file and after
approximately after two hours, it
finished witht the following:
clearing device /dev/hdc5
clearing device /dev/hdd5
(procentage..)
parsing configuration file
handling MD device /dev/md0
analyzing super-block
disk 0: /dev/hdc5, 6297417kB, raid superblock at 6297344kB
disk 1: /dev/hdd5, 6297417kB, raid superblock at 6297344kB
initializing raid set
writing raid superblock
MD ID: a92b4efc
Conforms to MD version: 0.36.4
Raid set ID: 16b9830
Creation time: Fri Oct 16 09:46:45 1998
Update time: Fri Oct 16 11:54:21 1998
State: 1 (clean)
Raid level: 1
Individual disk size: 6149MB (6297344kB)
Total number of disks: 2
Number of raid disks: 2
Number of active disks: 2
Number of working disks: 2
Number of failed disks: 0
Number of spare disks: 0
Disk 0: raid_disk 0, state: 6 (operational, active, sync)
Disk 1: raid_disk 1, state: 6 (operational, active, sync)
mkraid: completed
I have then tried to run '/sbin/mdadd /dev/md0 /dev/hdc5 /dev/hdd5' as described in
the Quickstart file, but I
got the following :
[root@triglav /root]# /sbin/mdadd /dev/md0 /dev/hdc5 /dev/hdd5
/dev/hdc5: Invalid argument
/dev/hdd5: Invalid argument
I've also noticed that this appends to the 'dmesg' output:
mdadd(pid 818) used obsolete MD ioctl, upgrade your software to use new ictls.
mdadd(pid 818) used obsolete MD ioctl, upgrade your software to use new ictls.
I have of course recompiled the kernel and this is the MD status report while it boots
:
md driver 0.90.0 MAX_MD_DEV=16, MAX_REAL=12

raid5: measuring checksumming speed
8regs : 97.917 MB/sec
32regs : 79.629 MB/sec
using fastest function: 8regs (97.917 MB/sec)
Both drives are Western Digital EIDE drives, one on master, the second on slave, and
the hdc5 and hdd5
are the only partitions on them, both secondary. The drives are both on the secondary
IDE channel.
This is the output of 'cat /proc/mdstat' :
[root@triglav /root]# cat /proc/mdstat

If you have any idea what could be wrong, I'd really appreciate the answer.
