1. I think the LVM is implemented to kernel 2.2.x but not usable (as far
as I remember, there is the advice to left the option untouched). The
raidtools-0.90 are only usable after patching the kernel with
raid0145-...-patch; I think only the "old" raiddrivers are include to
the kernel source (I am new to kernel 2.2.x so correct me if I am
wrong).
2. There is some documentation laying around, of course. I guess, that
software raids will always be faster than hardware raids, because most
of the speed of hardware raids depends on the controller itself and the
CPUs on a mainboard will always be faster than the ones on a
raidcontroller.
I do not remember the URL of the guy who wrotes an article about
software raids; but it is written in german; my advice: start
"altavista" or something else and type in "linux raid documentation" and
you will find the information you are searching for.
