There is an unofficial patch for the 2.2.10 & 2.2.9 kernel at

http://www.unspecific.com/pub/linux/raid/

that applies cleanly.  Well, I didn't actually test the 2.2.9 but the other
works just fine.  Solved all of the resync problems and the mkraid errors.

You still have to use the --really-force flag but along with the latest
version of raidtools you should be up and running with no problems.

Incidentally, I installed a raid5 configuration and since then, it seems to 
have
stabilized and all appears to be okay.

I may write an informal how-to for the setup since there seems to be LOTS
of confusion out there stemming from the lack of info available AND the
kernel/raidtools inconsistency.  All in due time, though.
