My understanding is that the Hardware Smart-2 RAID on the Compaq is not
officially supported and you will need a 2.3.x kernel to get it
working...probably with patches.

I don't know much about the dell..

Over the last 6 months, I've pretty much learnt that if you want to use
Linux, badged systems are probably not a good idea...not to mention the fact
that if a HD dies on a badged system, you have to replace it with their
drives which are usually pretty expensive.

Have you looked at valinux servers?
