Is it really that slow? The md-devices are faster than a regular disk (I use
RAID 5). I have a swapfile on the md, this is to prevent the machine from
crashing if a single swapdisk would crash. The main idea with redundant
arrays is to protect against diskfailure, but with swapping on a single disk
I consider that protection to be severely undermined.

I experience no performance problems, but of course with 1Gb of memory the
swap is not used very much.
