Can you specify which host adapter you use (assuming you use SCSI) ?
First, not all host adapters, host adapter firmwares or driver handle
disappearing targets equally. My best experiences are with SYM53c8xx
derivates with the ncr53c8xx or sym53c8xx driver. I never experienced
any hang with this setup, even with very badly behaving targets (data
overrun, underrun, unexpected disconnects, etc).
With some adapters, the firmware hangs. With some adapters, the
driver hangs.
Now, you have to know that SCSI in itself doesn't support hot removal
or insertion of devices: at worst, silent data corruption could happen.
Specially designed enclosures ensuring the power is cut last when
removing and applied first when inserting, will ensure SCSI stability.
