I did it last week with 2.0.33 + raidtools 0.42 Was pretty easy. Here
is my cook book.

On another system already at 2.2.x I built a kernel with the
necessary network drivers & disk drivers + raid tools

added the raid tools and new kernel to an existing boot disk

booted old system and performed the upgrade

switched the partition types to "fd"

rebooted to clean up md construction and ext2 checks

deleted all the file in places other than
   home
   src
   stuff like apache/java/postgres/ssl, etc...

.... basically stripped the old system away all the 2.0.33 stuff

did an NFS install using the boot disk, rebooted DONE
you could do the same thing by transferring the binaries to install
to a directory on the array and installing from the disk directly --
if you have room

after that, I setup lilo to boot from a second raid1 mini-partition
so everything is raid including my root boot.
