Hi. I have random problem with my out-of-the-box RedHat 6.1 Linux workstation, with random freeze of the system (usually during the night, at 4 o'clock, sometimes while I'm working, during intensive disk access): actually the network board is still working, you can ping the system, but you cannot start any process or do a remote login. I also had the corruption of at least one file (kpanel) and during the running of 'rpm -Va', I have systematic segmentation faults on certain packages. After these seg-faults, in /var/log/messages there the following kind of error (sorry for the formatting) Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000808 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 07e3d000, %cr3 = 07e3d000 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: *pde = 00000000 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: Oops: 0000 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: CPU: 0 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: EIP: 0010:[do_generic_file_read+347/1500] Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: EFLAGS: 00010206 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: eax: c7fdb3d0 ebx: 00006000 ecx: c74ecee0 edx: 00000800 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: esi: 00006000 edi: 00000000 ebp: 00000000 esp: c1c59f3c Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: Process rpm (pid: 8222, process nr: 111, stackpage=c1c59000) Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: Stack: 00000000 00000400 c7fdb3d0 00000000 00006000 00000000 00020000 00000000 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: 00000000 00000000 00006000 c74ecee0 c011da1b c0917800 c0917814 c1c59f8c Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: c011d968 c0917800 ffffffea 00000000 00000000 00000400 bffff188 00000000 Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: Call Trace: [generic_file_read+99/124] [file_read_actor+0/80] [sys_read+174/196] [system_call+52/56] Feb 11 13:43:18 prezzemolo kernel: Code: 39 4a 08 75 f0 39 5a 0c 75 eb ff 42 14 b8 02 00 00 00 0f ab There have been several of these messages over the time (but never during the system freezes). I'm using the 2.2.12 kernel, with raidtools-0.90-5. I have two SAMSUNG SV0842D IDE hard-disk, with RAID1 partitions. It is possible that these problems are related to RAID? Thanks for you attention.
