there are a few benchmark progs arround

bonnie    :old benchmark program
bonnie++  :updated bonnie to reflect modern hardware
tiotest   :looks promising, still being developed
iozone    :havent tried this, but www.iozone.org shows it can do pretty
graphics, and also has a long feature list.

tiotest has been getting a lot of attention around here lately, so maybe
you should give it a go.
