It's odd that it doesn't work, as I remember YAST doing installs on
SCSI-only systems just fine. What version are you using?
Hmm. Maybe you chose "standard kernel" instead of "kernel for SCSI
systems"?

Yes.
You can also (and I think I'd recommend that), boot from your
installation CDs, and then "boot installed system", This will
leave you running off your installed system, just as if you'd
booted off the HD.
