Hi folks,
I sent this message to linux-kernel, and someone there asked me to post
it here (wisely so).

The system:

SMP PPro (2)
BT-958
2.1.130
UNISYS 525M SCSI tape (detected as ARCHIVE VIPER 525M)

the problem:
Writes to scsi tape work fine, i.e. tar -cvf /dev/st0 /<whatever> finish
and write correctly. Reads do not finish. I can read the whole tape,
but at the end of the operation the system load skyrockets and the
process hangs. This is solved by popping the tape out of the drive -
then the process ends in error. As far as I can tell, the trouble is
when we try to close the device. So tar -xvf /dev/st0 will extract all
the files ok, but the process hangs when the tape is done rewinding.

2nd (unrelated) problem:
My hard disk just gave up the ghost so I can't test anymore (and just
when 2.2.0-pre1 came out!). If anyone has a similar system please try
this. I think the problem still exists in 2.2.0-pre1. It would be nice
if 2.2 ran on my machine without problems (everything else is great and
*fast*).
