        Thank you for your quick response and useful suggestions.  Reducing
the SCSI bus speed from 80 MB/s to 53.4 MB/s seems to resolve the problem.
I will try to get a shorter cable and see if I can then raise the speed
back to the rated value of 80 MB/s.

        Adaptec Firmware Setup: Set SCSI Options: ID 0 Speed: 53.4 MB/s

Result:
        Failure rate during write:      <    100 per 1 T bytes
        Failure rate during read:       <     10 per 1 T bytes
