Folks, here's a kinda strange one, which may be of interest
to some...
System: Dell PowerEdge 2300, running stock Redhat 6.0; an
extra Adaptec 2940U2W stuck in, with a (Sun-badged) DLT 7000
tape drive (F?/W SE) plugged into the external connector (U2
LVD). NB: a 2940U2W also has two internal connectors, one
U2 LVD, and the other "plain" Ultra wide SE...
Terrible trouble... I could write random amounts of tape
before I'd get a SCSI bus reset (not immensely useful for
backups :-). Assumed cables/termination -- borrowed what I
have reason to believe were good ones of both... the same.
Eventually plugged the DLT into the "plain" UW SE, using an
internal cable. Everything has worked perfectly since.
Possible explanations: (a) it *is* cables/termination, and I
didn't get to the bottom of it [maybe I *must* have a U2 LVD
terminator, even though there are no such devices on the
bus?]; or (b) it's a partly-duff 2940U2W card; or (c)
something else? Anyone want to wager a guess? Thanks,
Will
