We're having a severe problem with 2.2.x. We have a machine with 3 SCSI
controllers - 2 NCR Symbios (onboard) and one Adaptec 2944UW. There are
12 SCSI disks attached. The root disk plus two others are attached to
the first NCR chain (scsi controller 0), the rest are attached to the Adaptec
card (scsi controller 2).
When the system boots, the NCR driver recognizes all 3 disks on it. (sda-sdc)
The Adaptec aic7xxx module then loads, and it recognizes all of its disks.
(sdd-sdl). However, when the number of disks is reported back to the kernel,
only sda-sdg is recognized, leaving the last 5 disks (SCSI IDs 4,5,6,8,9 on
the Adaptec) unknown.
It doesn't matter whether or not the /dev/ entries for the other drives exist.
The kernel refuses to recognize any disk above /dev/sdg.
/proc/scsi/scsi lists all of the found SCSI devices. dmesg seems to indicate
that the drives were recognized and were (at least by the low-level adapter
driver) assigned sd? names. For some reason, though, it doesn't appear as
if the correct number of detected drives is being reported back to the kernel.
This is obviously a major problem. Does anyone have an idea what could be
wrong?
For reference, I've included the output of several things below.
