At leat the VL versionof BusLogic 4xx was 1542 compatible and
I had tough time to configure them both at the same time.
On linux, I first did the hosts.c editing like you did.
(It was difficult to configure them under OS/2, too. Unless
proper ordering was observed, one of the drivers got hund during
booting.)

Eventually, I learned the module trick, and then finally,
I retired both :-)
(Now use PCI BusLogic FlashPoint LT and tmscsim-driven AMD scsi chip
cards.)
